Buying Food in Bulk

Ask Doctor Gertrude: Episode 2

Dr. Gertrude is my British Alias that answers questions from my blog or my followers on Instagram or facebook. I figure “adulting” is serious enough and so I’m always up for adding a little fun. Tune in to watch Dr. Gertrude answer questions about buying in bulk.

I loved “Wasteful and Wanting’s” question! If you have seen any of my cooking videos, you may notice my massive container of salt. I bought a 25 pound bag of salt about 6 months ago at Sams Club and it’s been great. It’s basic table salt, so it’s not iodized and thus, it does not expire. Go Salt! However, if you purchase iodized salt, it has an average shelf-life of 5 years. I also just purchased a 50 pound bag of rolled oats at Sprouts. Normally, I would ask one of the store associates if they could grab one of their 50 pound bags from the back. However, due to the Corona Virus, Sprouts had their 50 pound bags out and available for purchase. I’m yet again, the proud owner of a 50 pound bag of Rolled Oats. I’m Ecstatic! It’s not necessary to congratulate me, I know you are all very happy for me!

25 Pound Bag of Salt…$5.00

50 Pound Bag of Rolled Oats…$44.00

Knowing you can have Oatmeal for next 2 years…priceless!

How long to rolled oats last? I’ve heard a few different opinions. But when they are stored in an airtight container, cool and dry place they can last anywhere from 2 years to 3 years. If they aren’t stored well, they may only last 12 months. So, when you get your rolled oats make sure they are stored in an airtight container. Our last 50 pound bag lasted us 3 years and did not go bad (we live in a very dry climate).

I have a great tip on getting free airtight containers! I don’t want you to break the bank on storage. Stay tuned!
