Homemade baking powder biscuits are a great side for soups, salads, BBQ, or add a little honey and they make for a yummy treat! This recipe is simple and delicious. For instance, most rolls contain yeast and requires time to rise, however, these biscuits use baking powder as the raising agent. The baking powder begins to work instantly. The texture is different than rolls; so soft and flakey. You have got to try these puppies hot out of the oven!

Biscuits with Homemade Jam are Heaven
Why I love to make bread, Rolls or Biscuits
Whenever I make soup, my kiddos usually request some type of bread as a side. I wonder why? Could it be they eat such piddly amounts of my veggie infused soup, that they need some starch to counteract their hunger? No, that can’t be it because my children are perfect and never dislike anything I make. Of course, they eat their soup until their bowl is clean.
Yep, you guessed it, that was not reality. Now that I just woke up from that awesome dream, I’ll tell you why I like to make bread, rolls, or biscuits. Most of my kiddos as they get older are not picky but I have two right now that resist vegetables like the plague. Often, I’ll use the soft delicious biscuits as a bargaining chip. Or, the biscuits are a way for me to know for sure that they won’t die of starvation through the night. Biscuits or bread are a great inexpensive filler that can help stretch your meal to feed more people.
Baking Powder Biscuits
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour sometimes I will do half whole wheat flour but the texture is best with 100% all-purpose
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 3 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ cup shortening (regular or butter flavored)
- ¾ cup milk or original almond milk
Instructions
- Heat Oven to 450°F.
- In medium bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening, using a pastry blender (or pulling 1 table knives through ingredients in opposite directions), until mixture looks like crumbs. Stir in milk until dough leaves side of bowl (dough will be soft and sticky).
- Place dough on lightly floured surface. Knead lightly 10 times. Roll or pat ½ inch thick. Cut with floured 2- to 2¼-inch round cutter (I use a mason jar ring). Place on un-greased cookie sheet about 1 inch apart for crusty sides, touching for soft sides.
- Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheet. Serve warm.
Can’t wait to make this. I’ve never had much luck making biscuits. I’ll let you know how it goes 😉
